Abstract

This study raises the theme of political motivation in writing by Ahmad Syafii Maarif with George Orwell as a comparison. This theme of writing motivation has not been widely raised and therefore needs to be done in order to improve literacy among students and lecturers. Three questions are raised in this study: What is meant by political motivation in writing? What are Maarif and Orwell's views on political motivation in writing? How is this political motivation in writing reviewed from a psychological perspective. For this purpose, the Gadamerism hermeneutic approach is applied to relevant texts as well as the psychology of writing motivation which includes cognitive and socio-cultural theories. This study itself is classified as a qualitative literature research conducted on several essays and political novels by George Orwell as well as several articles and books by Ahmad Syafii Maarif. This study comes to the conclusion that it is important to have political motivation in writing; that no writing is free from political bias. However, as Maarif and Orwell did, this must be done accompanied by high social awareness so as not to get caught up in practical and pragmatic political interests. This political motivation itself is included in the category of external motivation which has an equally important role as internal motivation for a writer.
