Abstract

Character education is an educational process aimed at instilling and developing moral and ethical values within individuals. Substantively, character education shares similar meanings with moral education and akhlak (moral conduct) education, as the core of all three is oriented toward shaping behavior and personality based on noble values. However, the development of the digital era has brought particular challenges to character education, which are reflected in the decline of students’ moral quality. Therefore, this study focuses on the concept of character education according to Ki Hadjar Dewantara and its relevance to Islamic Religious Education in the digital era. The purpose of this study is to examine the concept of character education proposed by Ki Hadjar Dewantara and to analyze its application within the context of Islamic Religious Education amid technological advancements. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach using library research as its method. Primary data were obtained from the works of Ki Hadjar Dewantara, particularly the book written by Ki Hadjar Dewantara on Education entitled Bagian Pertama: Pendidikan (The First Part: Education), while secondary data were derived from various related literature and scholarly works with similar discussions. The findings indicate that Ki Hadjar Dewantara’s emphasis on the spiritual development of students aligns with the objectives of Islamic Religious Education, which prioritize the cultivation of moral and ethical values, especially in addressing the challenges of the digital era. His concept of character education is grounded in Pancadarma, the Among System, and the Tri Centers of Education, which collectively aim to shape students’ character in accordance with the Indonesian national identity through the roles of the family, school, and community. In the context of Islamic Religious Education in the digital era, Ki Hadjar Dewantara’s educational philosophy remains relevant, as it emphasizes the integration of intellectual mastery with moral, spiritual, and virtuous character development to form individuals who are intellectually competent and possess strong character
